JOY IN THE PARK!
May 10 & 11, 2024
Starting at 6pm
OUTDOOR EVENT SERIES IN DAVID CROMBIE PARK
Join us for "Joy in the Park" in David Crombie Park on May 10th and 11th, starting at 6 PM! An event that promises to entertain everyone, from the young ones to the arts lovers.
We will start with live music by Aline Morales, Carlos Cardozo, and André Valerio who form together an energetic band that ignites the stage with their electrifying fusion of forró, infusing tradition with innovation. Right after the music, we will enjoy the physical dance piece "One Couch" by Throwdown Collective where three friends who find themselves within the confined area of a small couch, work together to negotiate life in their close quarters.
One of the highlights of the event will be the unveiling of Jamii's new photo exhibition "The Pavilion", curated by Sabrine S Hakam, with artistic advisor Sarah S Ahmad, and showcasing the talent of seven local photographers. The exhibition explores the concept of 'making space' for underrepresented groups or ideas to shine in public areas. The selected photographs present a compelling narrative of human behavior within community spaces. You will have the opportunity to learn more about this exhibit directly from Sabrine, Sarah and the photographers!
While adults discover the photo exhibit, the young ones can high-five our stiltwalker Troy Feldman, or add a splash of color on their lovely faces with our official Esplanade facepainter Linda Epp. Linda has a magic wand that can transform your little ones into unicorns, fierce tigers, or butterflies!
Last but not least, everyone can get a henna design on their hands with Sonia Sumaira, an amazingly talented henna artist from Punjab - Pakistan: Henna is an ancient art that showcases the beauty and intricacy of traditional designs and patterns on body parts. The practice of using henna for body decoration has deep cultural roots, back thousands of years across various cultures, including ancient Egypt, India, and the Arabian Peninsula.
